Pro Bono
Pro Bono / Community Activities
Shefsky & Froelich attorneys reach out to the Chicago community to provide legal services to those most in need, but least able to pay. We believe our pro bono activities are a professional duty, and one that is embraced firmwide. Our attorneys have provided legal assistance to low-income individuals, charitable institutions, and others. At times attorneys take personal time to donate hours drafting wills, advocating for individuals, as well as drafting articles of incorporation for nonprofit groups. Our pro bono work uplifts and motivates all of us.
Giving Back to the Community We are acutely aware of the blessings that have been bestowed upon us: good health, prosperous business, supportive families, and loyal clients. We feel it is important to give back to the community by sharing the benefits of our good fortune with those less fortunate, and by helping to improve the Chicago area through our support of worthwhile charities and by providing litigation assistance to the indigent.
Charitable Organizations
Litigation To assist the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in the administration of Justice and, as a means to provide our young lawyers with vital courtroom experience early in their careers, we have agreed to perform pro bono services for indigent, incarcerated convicted felons for whom the Seventh Circuit has certified their right to appeal from lower court rulings. These defendants, acting as their own attorneys, had raised issues in their cases that the Seventh Circuit deemed might contain merit.
The Seventh Circuit asks lawyers to represent these individuals through a complete appellate process in order to prevent unjust convictions that may have occurred in the lower federal and state courts of Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin. Shefsky & Froelich has taken on nine such cases. These cases are on appeal for procedural errors – both by the attorneys representing the prosecution and the defense and the courts. Our lawyers, under the supervision of our senior partners, fully brief and argue these cases.
While the defendants may have raised issues in their petitions, these issues may be unsupported by the facts of the case or the record in the trial court. Others, such as Thomas Moore, in the case with Moore v. Knight, an appeal from the Northern District of Indiana, are both factually supported and legally defensible. We are pleased to have served the Court and our clients in these matters and to have made a significant contribution to the criminal justice system in our country.
